The JAX Chamber Board of Directors on Friday morning selected John Peyton as 2018 Chamber Chair.
Peyton, a former Jacksonville mayor who is now president of GATE Petroleum Company, currently serves on the Chamber’s board and will begin as Chair-elect in January 2017.
“In the ever expanding global marketplace, we must continue to aggressively tell Jacksonville’s story around the world,” Peyton said. “With business-friendly governments, low tax burden, a great quality of life and top-notch transportation infrastructure, Jacksonville continues to be a prime location for companies to relocate and grow. I look forward to being a part of the continued economic growth in our city and working with businesses to expand and invest in Jacksonville.”
The Chamber traditionally selects its chair more than a year in advance. In his role as Chair-elect, Peyton will lead the 2017 Leadership Trip and the Chamber’s Board of Governors in 2017, a larger group of business leaders that helps to implement policy and priorities set by the Board of Directors. Darnell Smith, North Florida Market President for Florida Blue, is Chair-elect this year and will serve as Chair of the Board of Directors in 2017.
While serving as mayor, Peyton focused on programs and policies that helped improve the overall quality of life for citizens, including RALLY Jacksonville!, a literacy program to help better prepare children to enter school, and created the Jacksonville Journey, a program to support crime prevention and intervention programs while providing resources for law enforcement. Peyton was also known for aggressively recruiting companies to Jacksonville and worked closely with JAXUSA Partnership, the Chamber’s economic development arm, to showcase the city to businesses looking to expand.
“Our community is fortunate to have passionate leaders like John Peyton who have dedicated their time and energy to serving our city and who continue to answer the call,” Smith said. “John knows what it takes to help build a great city and is an excellent choice to lead our Chamber. I look forward to working with John next year and in his year as chair in 2018.”
Peyton rejoined GATE Petroleum after leaving City Hall and was named president in 2012. Among other community activities, Peyton is a former chair of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and the Jacksonville Symphony.
Peyton is a graduate of Mercer University and the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program.
The remainder of the 2017 JAX Chamber Board of Directors will be finalized next month.
