North Florida TPO and Clean Fuels Coalition Host Expo

TPO Announces ChargeWell Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program

nftpo-logo-smallThe North Florida Transportation Planning Organization (North Florida TPO)  hosted the 2015 Florida Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) Expo at the University of North Florida’s Adam W. Herbert University Center.

More than 100 attendees gathered to experience the latest AFV’s, learn about alternative fuel and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and hear success stories from companies who have switched to alternative fuels.

North Florida TPO Executive Director Jeff Sheffield presented the Regional Alternative Fuels Master Plan, which includes more than $4 million in AFV and infrastructure investments.

“The TPO Board really deserves the credit for their vision and leadership in supporting these investments,” Sheffield said.

To encourage the use of EV’s the North Florida TPO is providing $300,000 to purchase and install EV charging stations in the area, branded as part of the TPO’s ChargeWell network.  In partnership with JEA, North Florida TPO is now seeking local businesses, non-profit agencies and government entities in JEA’s service territory to apply for the award of a publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations to be installed, owned and operated by the applicant on their property.

In the future, the TPO will work with other utilities to expand the ChargeWell network and provide electric vehicle drivers more opportunities to charge-up in the region.  The application deadline is March 30, 2015.  Program details and applications are available at jea.com/electricdrive and northfloridatpo.com/clean_cities.

Additional investments announced include:

  • St. Johns County Compressed Natural Gas Fleet Conversion ($732,000)
  • JTA Fleet and Public Access CNG Stations ($2.75 million)
  • Florida East Coast Railway Liquefied Natural Gas LNG Pilot Project ($375,000)
  • City of Jacksonville Compressed Natural Gas Sanitation Trucks ($315,000)
  • JAXPORT Clean Truck Program ($162,000)

The event also featured presentations from Champion Brands President Earl Benton and ThyssenKrupp Elevators Director of Fleet Tom Armstrong about their successful transitions to alternative fuel fleets.

After the formal program attendees checked out the latest AFV’s including consumer, private and public fleet vehicles powered by CNG, LNG, propane autogas and electricity exhibited by Amerigas, Claude Nolan Cadillac, Coggin Nissan, Ferrellgas, Florida Transportation Systems, Inc., Lively Technical Center, Nimnicht Chevrolet, NovaCharge, Phil Axt, Precision Alternative Fuel Conversions, Tom Bush BMW and Waste Pro.
