Beating the odds

Late last year the U.S. Census Bureau reported that for the first time in 30 years, businesses were dying at a faster rate than new ones were being created.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Though I hope this trend reverses, I’ll leave the solutions to the talking heads on cable. But one thing is for sure, there will always be entrepreneurs eager to validate their ideas with the marketplace. Most will fail, but some will go on to have thriving businesses.

As we have done for a number of years, we are highlighting some of those businesses in this issue. Each has earned the designation of “Small Business of the Year” from the JAX Chamber.

While I don’t think any of them will tell you they have “made it,” they have certainly reached a level that deserves to be recognized. I would encourage the rest of our business community to consider these companies when you have a need for products and services.

Many times doing business with a smaller company can result in increased satisfaction. They care, want you to be a repeat customer and frankly, they need the business.

So congratulations to this year’s winners! We look forward to following your success.
