Local couple brings frozen custard to Atlantic Beach

Whits Jax LogoAs summer approaches, Atlantic Beach will gain a great place to cool down when Whit’s Frozen Custard opens at 38 Ocean Boulevard in early May. Originally launched in the small college town of Granville, Ohio, Atlantic Beach is the chain’s first foray outside of Ohio.

Whit’s Frozen Custard is a frozen confection that will be made fresh every day on site. The store will be making three flavors every day: vanilla, chocolate and a weekly flavor that changes every Monday.

The store will offer junior, single and double scoops that can be served in a dish or on a cone. The store will also offer the “Whitser” which is the customer’s choice of custard blended together with assorted toppings. The store will also offer sundaes, smoothies, shakes, malts, banana splits, root beer floats, custard cakes, chocolate covered bananas and custard sandwiches.

Frozen custard recipes date back to the early 1900s but it wasn’t until the ‘20s that commercial frozen custard machines were invented. It is said that the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago popularized frozen custard and by 1940 frozen custard stands were located all over the East and Midwest.

whits custardFrozen custard is still created with the same pure ingredients as a century ago: cream, eggs, and sugar. Frozen custard is thicker, smoother, and creamier than ice cream due to the higher butterfat content, the slower churning process that minimizes amount of air beaten into the mix, and the typical serving temperature of frozen custard, which is 26 degrees, about ten degrees warmer than ice cream. Frozen custard has less fat and sugar than most premium ice creams.

Whit’s Frozen Custard spares no expense in obtaining the highest quality ingredients — from fresh cream and pasteurized eggs to premium chocolates, fruit toppings, and fresh roasted nuts. Wait ’til you taste the difference!

Michael and Jessica McKinley, who live in Jacksonville, first discovered Whit’s visiting Michael’s family in Granville, Ohio, where Chuck and Lisa Whitman opened their first store in 2003. The McKinleys began working with the Whitmans over a year ago about expanding the concept beyond Ohio, where there are now 20 locations. Everything came together over the 2013 holiday season when the Ocean Boulevard location was secured.

Whit’s Frozen Custard of Atlantic Beach will be open from 11am to 10pm, seven days a week, year round.
