Regional leaders discuss transportation and logistics at JAXUSA Partnership Economic Development Forum

JAXUSALeading business and civic leaders examined the Jacksonville region’s opportunities for business growth and development during a Regional Economic Development Forum at the University of North Florida (UNF) in partnership with JAXUSA Partnership, a division of the JAX Chamber.

The program featured a panel and group discussion focusing on transportation projects and initiatives throughout the region. St. Vincent’s HealthCare President & CEO Moody Chisholm, who serves as the North Florida Regional Transportation Business Alliance Chair, moderated the panel.

The panelists included Florida Department of Transportation Urban Transportation Development Manager (District Two) James Bennett, Florida Department of Transportation Freight and Logistics Administrator Juan Flores, JAXPORT CEO Brian Taylor and JAX Chamber President and CEO Daniel Davis, who serves in the Florida House of Representatives and chairs the House Transportation and Highway Safety Subcommittee.

“The Forum provided a wonderful opportunity to hear from business and government leaders about regional transportation and logistics projects underway,” said JAXUSA Partnership President Jerry Mallot. “It is important that we work together to develop a strategic platform and advance these initiatives for the good of the region.”

Transportation officials highlighted the importance of collaboration and long-term planning to have projects ready to go. For example, Bennett said, when $450 million in state funding became available this year, $300 million in projects were awarded to Northeast Florida because officials had plans in place and were able to move quickly.

The event also included an update regarding activity on freight and logistics legislation. The JAX Chamber recently named Alan Mosley as the new Vice President of Transportation, Energy and Logistics. In his role, Mosley serves as the executive director of the North Florida Regional Transportation Business Alliance, which will advocate for and advance regional transportation and logistics projects that benefit the region’s economy and help businesses thrive.

“A solid transportation system is one of the foundations of a thriving economy and supports job growth, economic development and investment in our region,” Mosley said. “We will be working with our public sector partners to look at the region’s transportation issues through business lens – both for short-term needs and long-term planning that will better position us in the future.”
