Local Man Vies for $100K to Jumpstart Small Business

Jacksonville’s Daniel Burstein has been named a finalist in the running for $100,000 to jumpstart his small business.

His light bulb moment was outside a Publix grocery store when he noticed the underutilized real estate on its roof.  His solution?  Turn these roofs into urban farming spaces.  Elevated gardens could be used to grow produce picked in the morning and sold that afternoon in the stores below.  Benefits include the cooling effects of green roofs, a hyper-local supply system creating jobs, reduced automobile emissions, and lower produce costs.  Not to mention fresh, local food that yields better nutrition.

Daniel’s idea was selected out of thousands in the GQ and Ketel One “A Gentleman’s Call” competition where the community can vote for him at  The winner will be announced in February.
