Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors selected for Downtown Jacksonville Beach streetscape improvement

Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors Inc. has been selected as the company responsible for the construction work for the Downtown Jacksonville Beach streetscape improvements. Construction for the six-phase project began Nov. 30 and will continue through Fall 2012.

“We are proud to be part of the revitalization of an area that plays such a big role in the Jacksonville Beach economy and community.” Ryan Schmitt, president of Petticoat-Schmitt and Beaches resident. “The overall goals of the project will reflect the core values of safety, family friendliness, walk-ability and small community feel.”

This project focuses on reshaping of the avenues and streets in the Central Business District, the area bounded by A1A, Beach Blvd., 4th Avenue North and First Street. Improvements also include the installation of landscape, hardscape, irrigation and street lights. An emphasis on open spaces, ocean views and beach access as well as the development of entertainment venues, gathering places and other mixed-use spaces are also key components of the overall revitalization of the area.

Petticoat-Schmitt has considerable experience with multi-phase construction projects within busy business districts, most notably the ongoing San Marco Streetscape Improvement Project. Like San Marco, the schedule for the six-phase Jacksonville Beach project was designed to help reduce the impact on any one area for an extended period of time, with each construction phase lasting only a few months. Community needs and immediate positive economic impact were also taken into consideration when determining the construction schedule.

“Our goal is to be flexible whenever possible to best meet the needs of the community,” said Schmitt. “During all phases of construction, we will do everything possible to maintain pedestrian and vehicle access to businesses and public areas, as well as coordinate with area businesses in an effort to minimize inconvenience as much as possible.”
