JAX Chamber welcomes Khan to Jacksonville, expresses gratitude to former owner Weaver

The JAX Chamber welcomes the Jacksonville Jaguars new owner, Shahid Khan, to Jacksonville and expresses sincere appreciation to Wayne and Delores Weaver for their commitment to the community.

“We fully support the Jaguars and are excited to welcome Shahid to our community,” said Wally Lee, president of the JAX Chamber. “We look forward to many successful years with our new team leader.”

With only 31 cities in the country that host an NFL franchise, the exposure and recognition Jacksonville receives nationally and internationally plays a significant role in business recruitment efforts. The economic impact on the region is more than $200 million per year.

Since the team’s inception, Jacksonville has attracted several large companies, including Deutsche Bank, Landstar, FDIC, Merrill Lynch, Citi, Convergys, The Main Street America Group, Rail America, Bridgestone, Pilot Pen and Fidelity National Financial.

“The Jaguars are a significant contributor to our quality of life and community pride,” said Hugh Greene, 2011 JAX Chamber chair and president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health. “We will continue to fully support the Jaguars, promote tickets sales and do everything we can to help make the Jaguars successful.”

“Wayne and Delores have been instrumental leaders in Jacksonville for nearly 20 years, and we will forever be grateful for their leadership, dedication and commitment,” said Tom Van Berkel, 2012 JAX Chamber chair and chairman and chief executive officer of property/casualty insurance company The Main Street America Group. “We will be reaching out to Shahid to help introduce him to our business community and vibrant city.”

The Chamber’s Sustain the Jaguars Committee stands behind the new owner and will continue to eagerly promote game attendance and support the team.

“We encourage our community to join us in welcoming Shahid,” said Ray Driver, chair of the committee and a partner at the law firm of Driver, McAfee, Peek & Hawthorne. “Now is the time to show him and the world our city’s hospitality and to make him feel at home.”
