The John Gorrie a condominium tour to benefit HabiJax and RAP

The John Gorrie a condominium, the former school and historic landmark that has recently undergone a meticulous restoration and renovation into condominiums and townhomes, will be the site of a historic guided tour on Saturday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as a fundraiser benefiting HabiJax and Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP).

“John Gorrie Junior High School holds special memories for many current and former members of the Riverside-Avondale community,” said Delores Barr Weaver. “We are excited to provide this special tour of the property. It is only fitting that we create an opportunity for the proceeds of the tour to benefit HabiJax and RAP, two important organizations with missions that support local preservation and community housing needs.”

The guided historic tour will highlight John Gorrie Junior High School’s long history in the Riverside-Avondale neighborhood. The tour will include special guides provided by RAP who will take visitors through the history of the building and its lasting impact on the community as they highlight the restoration and renovation process. The ROAR, the Jaguars Cheerleaders, and Jaxson de Ville, the Jaguars Mascot, will make an appearance. There will also be several antique cars from the era of John Gorrie Junior High School on display, provided courtesy of The Antique Automobile Club of America.

In addition to the on-site tour, tickets will also include a special “Taste of Riverside” promotion where various Riverside-area restaurants and shops will provide special discounts to tour ticket holders. Participating restaurants and shops include Bold City Brewery, Carmine’s Pie House, European Street Cafe, Five Points Theater, Intuition Ale, Gate Gas Station and Bakery Moderne.

Tickets for the tour can be purchased in advance for $15 and $20 at the door the day of the event.
