‘Drumline Buddies’ brings music to local school

Students from Jacksonville Country Day School’s Orff ensemble will team with fifth graders from Susie B. Tolbert Elementary for “Drumline Buddies!” on April 27. The students will rehearse with professional musicians in the morning, then perform before an audience in the afternoon.

Three members from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Drum Line (D-Line) will work with the students to prepare a drumming style concert to be performed before Susie B. Tolbert’s student body and invited guests at 1p.m.

“Drumline Buddies!” is the result of a grant from the Florida Elementary Music Educators Association. The grant covers most of the costs of hiring the D-Line musicians, and the purchase of 10 percussion instruments that will be used in the concert, and then left at Tolbert Elementary as a gift to their music program.

At Susie B. Tolbert, 90% of the students are considered economically disadvantaged and receive either free or reduced lunch. Many students have poor role models in the family or community.

Kent Staples, the music teacher for Susie B. Tolbert Elementary, is only on campus three days a week. The school has very few instruments for use in the classroom environment.

The grant gives Tolbert Elementary six sets of various sized hand drums and four pre-tuned djembes, an African-style drum.
