MWKF to host open house

The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation (MWKF) will be celebrating its 15-year anniversary on Friday, April 15, 2011, with an open house celebration for the community. Visitors will meet staff and students take a tour of the facility and programs. The open house at 1096 W. 6th Street runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In 1997, MWKF began to serve youth in the Jacksonville area by offering free tennis lessons to local Boys & Girls Clubs. MWKF’s flagship program—the TnT (Tennis-n-Tutoring) afterschool program began in one small classroom in the Emmett Reed Community Center with just 25 students. In 2008, with supporters from the community, the MaliVai Washington Youth Center was built- a 9,400 square foot facility complete with classrooms, media center/computer room, kitchen, teen room, fitness center, library, administrative offices and community rooms. Today, the program has grown to more than 160 students in kindergarten through high school.

MWKF also offers several programs and events to the community at large.

Special activities have been planned throughout the year to commemorate the Foundation’s 15 years of service to the Jacksonville community. The Foundation has already celebrated an Alumni Party which brought together former students and staff. The Foundation’s annual Servathon project was also extended from one week to 15-days of service and included several partners in the community. The mission of the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation is to develop champions in classrooms, on tennis courts and throughout communities.
