The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recently hosted a luncheon to honor outstanding volunteers and fundraisers involved in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Spring Great Strides walks throughout Northeast Florida, which raised more than $222,000. Great Strides is the foundation’s largest national fundraiser, producing more than $33 million in 2009 to support vital cystic fibrosis research and programs. Red Elephant Pizza and Grill graciously donated the lunch, while Batson-Cook Company helped design the one-of-a-kind trophies.

“The teams involved in this year’s fundraising efforts spent tireless hours recruiting support and preparing for each Great Strides walk,” said Claudia Werner, executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation North Florida office. “We are incredibly thankful for their hard work and dedication. This luncheon was a way to express our gratitude to them and acknowledge the contribution they make to the efforts of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.”

Trophies were given to top fundraising teams representing walks that took place in Hanna Park, Clay County, St. Augustine, Riverwalk, and Fernandina.  The five winning teams raised more than $25,000 through their efforts.

The team leaders were encouraged to decorate their trophies, display them in a prominent location and take them to upcoming Cystic Fibrosis Foundation events. Each year the trophy will be passed to subsequent top fundraising team for each walk site.

The fundraising continues in support of Great Strides, with several community fund-raisers planned for August. The fourth annual Bonefish Luncheon to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will take place on Thursday, August 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Bonefish Grille of Mandarin. A minimum donation of $15 is recommended to attend or $20 at the door on the day of the event. The event will feature a summer fashion show presented by Kohl’s Department Store in Fleming Island, and a buffet lunch, with all proceeds benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

On Saturday, August 28, two community events are taking place. The inaugural Putt-Putt Tournament at Putt-Putt Golf and Games in Fernandina Beach, is an evening competition. This is a putt-putt doubles tournament featuring two rounds of golf, giveaways, a prize drawing, contest prizes, drinks, dinner and ice-cream. Registration and practice rounds begin at 7 p.m., with the tournament teeing off at 8 p.m. The registration fee prior to the day of the event is $75. Walk up teams will be charged $100.
