FCMA conducts free summer ‘ChemCamp’

The North Jacksonville Community Advisory Panel (North Jax CAP), a committee of the First Coast FCMA logosmallManufacturers Association (FCMA), is offering its 10th annual free “ChemCamp,” this week to North Jacksonville students who have completed the eighth grade and are starting ninth grade in the fall.

Twenty students are participating in the camp, which is designed for students who have a strong interest in science, math, and chemistry. The students will be taken on tours, attend workshops at three different plants on Jacksonville’s north side, and will end the week with a career day at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s north campus.

Companies participating in the camp include IFF International – Flavors & Fragrances, Inc., CSX Transportation, LyondellBasell, and Reichhold, Inc.

ChemCamp will demonstrate real-world applications of science, mathematics, and technology and show the relevance of academic work to the real world. Students will have hands-on experience and learn about subjects ranging from the uses of plastics, to what is made out of pinesap to what chemicals go into the construction and operation of sports cars.
