Chamber to host Business Expo May 26

The Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 9th Annual Business EXPO from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. onbusiness expo May 26 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. Open to the public and free of charge, the EXPO will allow attendees to meet with more than 1,500 business professionals and visit more than 100 exhibit booths. In conjunction with the EXPO, the Chamber is hosting educational workshops that will focus on federal contracting opportunities, health care reform, small businesses and women-owned businesses.

“Our event agenda for the 2010 Business EXPO is focused on providing relevant content and educational workshops for Chamber members, many of whom are small to mid-sized business owners,” said Wally Lee, president of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce. “One of the most important issues facing business owners in today’s workplace is health care. We have put together a fact-based workshop that will address how the new health care reform bill will affect the health, business and lives of local business owners.”

A Chamber Council Luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with keynote speaker A. Hugh Greene presenting insights into the key components of health care reform and how the legislation will impact health care consumers. Greene is president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health, a comprehensive community-based health system that is comprised of five hospitals. Tickets to the luncheon are $25 for members and $35 for non-members and must be purchased in advance.

Dr. Rob Haley and Marsha Proctor Killen, Esq., owners of the health care consulting firm StrategyGen Co., will lead the health care workshop, “Health Care Forum: Just What the Doctor Ordered,” from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. before the Business EXPO. The workshop will focus on the newly enacted federal health legislation and its requirements, effective dates and tax code benefits. Small business owners will leave with a clear understanding of the actions they must take to comply with the law.

The workshop will address the recent consumer alert released by National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) about scammers who are trying to take advantage of citizen’s confusion about the new health care law and what people can to do protect themselves and their businesses. The health care workshop is $20 or $10 with the purchase of a luncheon ticket.

Additional workshops on the event agenda for the 2010 Business EXPO include the “Federal Contracting Opportunities Forum— Moving to the Next Level” from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for $135 (lunch not included), the “Small Business Center Orientation” from 3 to 4 p.m. for free, and the “Jacksonville Women’s Business Center Launch Pad” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for free.
