SBDC announces May, June workshops

The Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida (SBDC at UNF), located at the UNFsbdc University Center, has announced a number of workshops for fledgling and/or well-established small business owners for May and June.

These workshops will take place at the UNF University Center. Cost is $40 in advance or $50 at the door unless specified otherwise.

• How to S-T-A-R-T-U-P Your Own Business. May 18, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and June 24, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Tax Facts, May 6, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This workshops explores tax implications of the business structure, what is and is not deductible, electronic filing, payroll taxes and more.

• Where’s the Money?  And How Do I Get It? May 25, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This workshop will help you determine how much cash you need, find out where to get the cash you require, learn how the SBA guaranteed loan program works, and understand what a bank looks at when evaluating your loan package. This workshop will reveal the Top 10 Red Flags that might ultimately determine whether or not you receive the funding you need.

• Business Plan Basics. June 8, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This workshop provides an overview of the format and content of a business plan. Participants will be introduced to the key components of a plan and resources to help get them started.

• Marketing 101. June 15, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Achieve your sales and marketing goals by understanding your product or services, customers, prospects and competitors.  This class is taught by a marketing professional.

• How to Register in CCR. May 6, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The objective of this workshop is to successfully register you in the Central Contractors Registration site and familiarize you with the different self certification programs that can be gained through your CCR registration.  It will also teach you about the Dynamic Small Business Search, SBA Small Business Registration and ORCA.

Workshops presented at the Beaver Street enterprise Center, 1225 w. Beaver St., include:

• Government Contracting 101. May 20, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. This workshop will cover how the government buys goods and services; how a business can become certified and registered on the federal, state, and local levels; and how to find government contracting prime and subcontracting opportunities. 

• Get Certified: Small Business Certifications, June 10, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Learn what is required to get certification for minority, woman-owned, HubZone, and Service Connected Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses.  These certifications for small businesses will qualify your company to compete for set asides contracts with the state and federal government.

• Proposal and Bid Writing: Tips and Strategies. June 24, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Workshop topics include obtaining the solicitation package, bid or no bid decision making, preliminary preparation for bidding, qualifications and evaluation criteria, proposal elements, the source selection process and common proposal problems.
