Attendees at the complimentary workshop held at the offices of the Northeast Florida Builders Association were welcomed pastors, church leaders, and building and design professionals.

“The construction of worship facilities is both exciting and rewarding, yet there can be many unique hurdles to consider and address before building begins,” said Ed Varnes, founder and general manager of Varnes Contracting.  “We appreciate the contributions from our expert speakers, who shared recommendations about the building process, working with church committees and budgets, and designing a facility ideally suited for the congregation’s needs.”

The program speakers included Tom Messer, senior pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, who addressed Key Questions to Consider before Construction Begins, such as parking, land size and seating capacity.  First Baptist Church Executive Pastor John Blunt discussed Understanding the Building Process, including selecting architects, engineers and contractors, and analyzing the positives and negatives of bid projects versus negotiated projects.  Accounting specialist Nick Simonic and American Enterprise Bank President Bennett Brown discussed financial options and plans.

“This program was very useful and contained a lot of good information,” said Pastor Richard “Buddy” Wimberly of Lannie Road Baptist Church.  “The workshop featured prominent pastors who have been through major construction projects and shared their experiences with the group.  Their information and knowledge was invaluable.”
