Small biz confidence on the rise

Small businesses are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, according to the most recent Discover Small Business Watch ( Economic confidence among small business owners jumped to its highest level in 18 months in August as more owners expressed faith that the economy is on the mend and indicated they are more willing to invest in advertising and new inventory.

The Discover index rose to 89.8, up 7.7 points from July and the highest level since 90.9 in Feb. 2008.

The Small Business Watch is based on a poll of 3,000 small business owners. The poll also asked about business segments with the best opportunity for growth. Respondents said:

• Green industries (13%),

• Business services (10%),

• Energy (9%),

• Technology (9%),

• Financial services (8%),

• Food service and restaurants (6%),

• Manufacturing (5%),

• Retail (4%),

• Transportation (2%),

• Not sure (35%).
