JM Jacksonville Roofing receives OSHA safety award

The Johns Manville (JM) Jacksonville, Fla., roofing systems facility was been awarded the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star, according to Jacksonville plant manager Steve Allaire.

Out of 7 million work facilities in the United States, this recognition has only been awarded to 1,786 sites since the program’s inception 25 years ago.  The Jacksonville facility is only the second roofing industrial plant in the United States to achieve this honor.

VPP is designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management, and participants include a select group of facilities that have displayed outstanding results, programs, and a healthy partnership with their facility employees and a focus on keeping employees safe. The program helps to achieve OSHA’s objective of partnership between OSHA and industry to more effectively protect workers.

OSHA awarded the Jacksonville facility’s VPP Star status after conducting a comprehensive assessment of its safety processes and procedures, and an intensive onsite audit by a three-member federal inspection team. The Star status is the highest level of achievement under the VPP program, and is bestowed on facilities that have a three-year average injury rate at or below the industry average. Additionally the Jacksonville plant recently reached the milestone of working six years without a lost-time or restricted-day injury.

“Safety is a way of life at JM and the VPP Star is the recognition for our effort but our reward is when our entire teamroofing_hp_on goes home to their family every day in the same condition that they arrived in,” Allaire said. “The entire Jacksonville team starts and ends each and every day with the mindset that nobody is going to get hurt today. We watch our fellow employees, not to catch them doing wrong, but to prevent them from getting hurt. We work together to achieve more in everything that we do and VPP is just one more example of our success as a team. I am extremely proud of the work the team has done to contribute towards these important achievements.”

The Johns Manville (www.jm.com) Jacksonville plant is a member of the First Coast Manufacturers Association.
