Small business feted in D.C.

A number of small businesses and their owners have been celebrated during National Small Business Week in CongratulationsWashington, D.C. Although not the top winner, Jacksonville’s Mary Tappouni, owner of Breaking Ground Contracting Company, was Florida’s top small business owner and was among those honored during the week’s celebration.

Among the awards given were:

• National Small Business Person of the Year, Jeanna Sellmeyer, owner of ASSET Group, Oklahoma City. First runner-up was Sumul Shah, president of Lumus Construction in Woburn, Massachusetts. Second runner-up was Vaughn Garner Akimeka Vasconcellos, president and CEO of Akimeka LLC, in Kihei, Hawaii.

• Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year, A.R. (Rey) Almodóvar, cofounder and chief executive officer of Intuitive Research and Technology Corp. of Huntsville, Ala.

• Small Business Subcontractor of the Year, Susan Englander, president of EEI Manufacturing Services of Clearwater, Fla.

Awards in 10 other Small Business Champion categories were also presented.
