Description

Take a journey with Tony Vecchio, Executive Director, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, and explore the "heads and tails" of marketing the Jacksonville Zoo. Through his story-telling style, Tony will give insight to staying innovative and entrepreneurial while accomplishing the mission of the organization and navigating a tight bottom-line. He will share tricks of the trade that draw in over 750,000 guests annually, and the importance and relevancy of the Zoo's success for our community. Join us for "keeping the fun in a business with a very serious mission."

Tony Vecchio has been Executive Director at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens since July 2009.  Under Vecchio’s leadership, the Zoo’s attendance has grown from 668,800 in FY2009-10 to 751,900 in FY2010-11.  In spring of 2011, the Zoo broke all previous records for annual attendance with its DinoAlive exhibit introduction.   With the opening of the Zoo’s new Butterfly Hollow exhibit this spring, the Zoo is heading toward another record-breaking year in FY2011-12.

Vecchio’s zoo career spans a 33 year period.  It began at Highland Park Zoo (now called Pittsburgh Zoo) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and continued with Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina, Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia, Roger Williams Zoo in Providence, Rhode, Island, and Oregon Zoo in Portland, Oregon. As Executive Director of the Oregon Zoo, the Zoo achieved record attendance in nine of the 11 years he was there.
